Scene And Overheard
Old people really tell it like it is. That is why an elder American is the subject of today’s “Scene And Overheard.”
Allow me to set the scene. I am waiting for an elevator in my apartment building after work. I stand beside an Old Woman (OW) who is dressed in a large, fleece North Face vest and holding an umbrella that rivals her in stature. We wait in polite silence for a bit until she looks over at me and speaks. This is our exchange:
OW: It’s cold out, right?
Me: Yes. It’s pretty chilly today.
OW: And the rain! Did you know this is the 10th day [of rain]?
Me: Really?
OW: Oh, yes. I don’t think I remember a June ever being this cold.
Me: Me neither.
OW: Hmm. Maybe this has something to do with the climate change they’ve been talking about lately!
She nodded earnestly at her deduction. I smiled and shrugged. And somewhere in the world, Al Gore shed a single tear.
